Abstract

The paper identifies and discusses the strategies of representation of Croatian geographical and cultural space, which are used in the latest edition of Lonely Planet Croatia travel guide. In order to point to the fictional nature of representations, the semiotic analysis of the signs systems that underlies the spatial representation is employed, and the underlying cultural and ideological patterns are identified. The space that is being represented is actually fabricated, and consequently Croatia has been established as a fictional geography. However, the space that is being represented not only constructs and maintains the myth of a coherent national culture, but goes beyond its primary function of being the simple frame of the knowledge production – by taking part in the process of national self-identification, and production of reality itself.
