Abstract

The Collection of Wooden Ship Models by the Self-Taught
Artist Nedjeljko Gugić Kotarac is one of the museum collections
that are not always accessible to the public and are
only occasionally presented to visitors. It consists of 41 ship
models, while the Vela Luka Culture Centre holds further
items by this maker.
Finding his prototypes in old drawings and books, Nedjeljko
Gugić Kotarac made models of historical ships in indigenous
woods (mercantile sailing ships, galleys, steamships, warships,
carracks and so on), and also produced numerous
models of local types of vessel (such as leut, bracer, svićarica
and so on). All these vessels were fully equipped with miniature
items such as barrels, oars, bailers, figureheads and nets.
Because of the importance that it has for the cultural heritage
of Vela Luka and because of the interest that it awakens
among local and foreign visitors, the Museum would like the
Collection of Wooden Ship Models soon to have its own permanent
display.
