Abstract

This paper examines the unchangeable words which were continuously in use in the Croatian literary language, as well as in the language of Croatian writers in general, between the 16th and the early 20th centuries. Those words are still current in a number of čakavian,
kajkavian, and Croatia's štokavian local speeches (organic idioms), as well as in Croatian dialect literature. The analysis shows that those words had not spontaneously disappeared from the contemporary literary language, for their absence is a direct result of actions
taken by the so-called Croatian Vukovians in order to expel those words from the literary language. As regards this particular segment, a precious link between the contemporary Croatian literary language, a centuries-old literary tradition and language, and numerous
Croatian local speeches has thus been broken.
