Abstract

The Croatian Museum of Tourism in Opatija, while commemorating International Museum Day in 2014, organised a project to
link up with private collectors in Opatija, by the making of visits to individual collectors and making lists and photographs of
their material, which was later on inventoried in a newly formed collection entitled Collection of Opatija Collectors. After work
for several months, the results were contacts made with 20 or so private collectors, most of whom agreed to cooperate; over
five hundred objects were examined and photographed; lists of the collectors’ collections were drawn up, becoming part of the
database of the Croatian Museum of Tourism, and from all this stemmed an exhibition in the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion called
Opatija History from Private Collections, 170 Objects of Opatija Collectors for the 170 years of Opatija Tourism.
It can well be said that the objective of having good quality connections with the collectors and of obtaining an insight into their
collections was met. In future projects, exhibitions and papers, what is more, the Croatian Museum of Tourism will find the data
about the material from private collections related to the tourist history of Opatija very useful. Thus in a single place, all the necessary data about material related to the Opatija past will be brought together, and privacy will be respected at the same time.
