Abstract

Chemical and physical characteristics of a chromium pigment - zinc tetraoxy-chromate ZnCr04 • 4Zn(OH)2 - are described. For its excellent anticorrosive effect the compound is used as a protective coating - »wash primer« for metals, chiefly for protecting the hull of a ship from noxious effects of sea flora and fauna. The technological process of zinc tetraoxy-chromate production in a Yugoslav chemical works which was not carried out under sufficiently hermetic conditions in its final stage resulted in the occurrence of zinc tetraoxy-chromate dust in the working environment exceeding maximum permissible concentration. In spite of short duration of exposure the exposed workers complained of subjective troubles and showed objective local changes characteristic of exposure to chromium compounds. As an increase in the production and application of zinc tetraoxy-chromate is to be expected it is necessary to undertake immediate measures of technical and medical prevention.
