Abstract

This article is a result of many years of field work on collecting personal and family nicknames of Bunjevci Croats that live in 16 settlements in the south of Hungary. The author has collected and analyzed both names on the site and also onomastic data from the archives, public and church record offices. He analyses variants of the female nickname formation (more then 2700 names) according to different settlements. The second part of the article is dedicated to the classification of nicknames. According to the form, the author distinguishes between simple, composite (12 subgroups) and compound (15 subgroups). According to the form of the stem he has classified nicknames in three groups: primary, secondary and tertiary names. According to the meaning of the basic stem he has classified them in 18 groups. Most of the analysed nicknames (36%) are of patronymic or matronymic origin.
The supplement include some folk stories that contain personal or family nick names, the list of informants and the register of accentuated nicknames.
