Abstract
In order to set up the predictive validity of one battery of tests for jobs in a ready-made clothes factory, it was necessary to determine the criterion of job success for workers whose results were to be used for validation. The criterion had to be established in the following circumstances:
- The number of workers employed on one operation was very small,
- The working tasks in different operations varied as regards the degree of complexity.
- The working groups were not comparable in ability.
The only way to obtain a sufficiently large sample was to comprise the results of workers employed in different groups on different operations. But if the rating of the workers' job performance had been done in accordance with the complexity of operations and the ambit of the groups, the correlation between test-results and such a criterion would have been lessened artificially. To solve the problem the rating-scale method was used, so that, except other factors, the complexity of operations as well as ·the ability of working groups were weighted adequately. After that the job proficiency of the same workers was assessed again, but this time the factors mentioned above were neglected. The correlations between the test performance and the first criterion were markedly higher than the correlations between the same tests and the second criterion. In this way the value of the first criterion was empirically proved.
