Abstract
Eleven cases of suicidal poisoning by eutizone are described. Two female patients were admitted to hospital in epileptic status, four suffered from pronounced epileptic fits in the acute phase, and one, who also took meprobamate, from hipnagogic hallucinations. The others experienced more or less pronounced nausea, headache, dizziness, psychomotor disturbances, and showed signs of the irritated central nervous system. The patients in epileptic status are described in more detail. One of them, who took 250 mg/kg of eutizone, showed signs of maximal excitation of the nervous system and aroused from coma only on the fourth day. After having aroused from coma the patient suffered from polyneuritic disorders which lasted one month. The other patient, who took 166 mg/kg of eutizone, went through a series epileptic fits and regained consciousness the same day, but was affected with retrograde and anterograde amnesia. The significance of EEG changes is discussed, data collected by other authors are compared, and possible mechanisms of epileptogenic effects of the hydrazide of isonicotinic acid as dealt with in current Iiterature are mentioned.
