Abstract
The relation between the penetration rate of paraoxon through the rat's skin and the size of the contaminated area on the one hand, and the concentration of the poison on the other, have been investigated. The penetration rate was estimated on the basis of the measurements of the blood cholinesterase activity of the poisoned rats. The fall in cholinesterase activity was considerably more rapid when the same dose and the same concentration of paraoxon were applied to a skin area four times larger, as well as in the rats given the same dose to the same skin area but when the applied concentration of paraoxon was four times higher. When determining the dermal toxicity of related compounds it is important to keep these two factors - the contaminated skin area and the concentration of the poison - as constant as possible, in order to attain a reliable basis for comparing their toxicity.
