Abstract

From the Mercury Mines of Idria 28 miners with a long exposure to mercury (9-22 years) and already showing symptoms of mercury poisoning were examined. Changes in the colour of the anterior lens capsule (the so-called »mercurialentis« or the Atkinson sign) were observed only in 3 miners, but in a very slight way. Neither the duration of exposure nor the appearance of other symptoms of poisoning seem to be in any relation to these changes. In the author's opinion individual susceptibility to mercury is likely to play an important part in whether the eye is affected by mercury or not.
