Abstract

In the serum of the dogs exposed to low barometric pressure (4.5 hours at 9000 m of simulated altitude, temperature 23° C) a decrease in the concentration of the reduced Vitamin C content from 0.80 ± 0.04 mg/100 ml to 0.63 ± 0.03 mg/100 ml (P < 0.01) was observed. The total amount of Vitamin C content did not change. However, the dogs exposed to low barometric pressure and cold (5 hours at 10,000 m of simulated altitude, temperature -10° C) cooled to 21.1 ± 0.38° C, while the concentration of the total and reduced Vitamin C content in their serum increased. From these observations the protective effect of hypothermia in hypoxia may be assumed.
