Abstract

The effect of ascorbic acid on the oxidation of benzene in phenol both in pure solutions and homogenized organs was studied. Evidence was given that in pure solutions ascorbic acid produced the oxidation of benzene in phenol, but no such effect was observed in biological medium. Addition of small amounts of biological material (blood) to the basic solution brought about a complete inhibition of the oxidizing reaction. The inhibitory effect of amino acids was also observed. On the basis of the experiments carried out it may be concluded that in the organism ascorbic acid does not produce the oxidation of benzene in phenol.
