Abstract

Three cases of ethyl nitrite poisoning having occured in a trial synthesis of glycol uryl are presented. Symptoms of both »nitrite effect« and methaemoglobinaemia were noted. There was, in addition, a vasodilator effect of ethyl nitrite upon the blood vessels of sclerae, producing a peculiar redness of the eyes. This hitherto undescribed manifestation of the »nitrite .effect« is briefly discussed. The absence of Heinz bodies is emphasized, as well as the fact that nitrites do not produce Heinz bodies.
