Abstract

This work analyzes how the consequences of the fall of the 'jers' (reduced vowels) are reflected in Croatian Glagolitic texts of the 15th century. The conditions under which the vowel jat (ě) and the front nasal (ę) gave 'a' are also discussed. The author points out the incompleteness of the rules for strong and weak positions of 'jers' and advocates including an analysis of distributional relations since such an analysis can help explain numerous so-called exceptions in the vocalization of “weak” 'jers'.
