Methods for the determination of free silica

Abstract

The principles for the determination of Iree silica are presented. At present chemical, optical and thermal methods, and to a less considerable degree the sedimentation method are used. The limitation of these methods is discussed, and a review of the literature concerned is given. It is pointed out that the errors occurring in a number of methods for the quantitative analysis of the mixtures containing free silica seem to be due to the structural disorder of the crystallized modifications of free silica, to, the properties of the particles of high dispersity, and to the properties of silicates contained in such mixtures. A preliminary qualitative X-ray analysis by the Debey-Scherrer method can help a great deal in the choice of the method for the determination of free silica to be applied in a given case.
