Abstract

The author examined 4500 miners and investigated the hygienic factors of the working environment in the light of old and new theories concerning nystagmus. He found, strictly speaking, only a very small number of nystagmus cases - far less than set forth in statistics for Western Europe and North America. The author considers the attitude of those looking for this or that specific cause of the miners, nystagmus to be wrong. Considering that nystagmus can be brought about by a whole series of causes, mostly exogenous, the author insists that the physician should look for several joint causes in the etiology of nystagmus. Medical practice can only profit by such an attitude. There is a need for a more precise definition of the workers' nystagmus. The examining physician should know well both the mechanism of its origin and the examination technique. The author draws attention to the nystagmus of neurotics, to iatrogenic nystagmus and to cases of aggravation and of simulation. As the most appropriate measures in nystagmus control the author suggests in addition to adequate living and working conditions, the choice of healthy worker for employment as well as periodical medical examinations.
