Abstract

Hearing loss may result from exposure to many forms of occupational noise. Several examples of occupational hearing impairment are presented. With the development of the science of acoustics, much is being done for the protection from harmful noise. In general, these efforts are directed along three different paths: (1) Elimination of noise at its source, (2) reducing noise altering the surroundings, (3) protection of the ear by various personal protective devices. The noise abatement programme should consist of evaluation of the intensity and frequency characteristics of the noise, pre-employment hearing studies, and periodic audiography on all employees exposed to hazardous or potentially hazardous sound. The programme should be administered by the industrial physician and the safety engineer.
