Abstract
In order to verify the difference in the energy expenditure when sitting on a seat with and without a back the author carried out on a subject four tests each for the two ways of sitting. In both series of tests the energy expenditure was measured (in basal conditions) every 60 minutes through 3 hours. The respirometer Benedict-Roth was used for the measurements. The results showed that when the subject was on a seat without a back the energy expenditure rose to +14.1% in comparison to the value of basal metabolism, thus already reaching the energy expenditure in a standing position of the same individual. On the other hand, the energy expenditure during a three-hour sitting on a chair with a back did not rise above +2.1%. The author ·concludes that wherever the nature of the work permits it seats with a back should be used by the worker.
