Abstract

Lead poisoning in foundries is a comparatively rare occurance, as it depends on the changeable contents of the ore and the various methods of metallurgical processes. In the case of our foundries it is mainly a matter of lead dust which penetrates the air of the premisses where the blust furnaces stand. This is caused by a higher -percentage of lead en the ore and higher temperature of the furnace. During systematical examination of workmen who work under the above described circumstances 19 mainly serious cases of lead poisoning were discovered. The majority of the workmen had not applied for medical assistance and some of 'them had no trace of subjective symptoms. It was characteristic for all cases that they showed a strong positive percentage of basofiler, and especialy those who worked. near the open furnace. All workmen with a positive diagnosis were taken away from work near the furnace and for the others, and any new workers the concern was advised to procure respirators with a colloide filter.
