Abstract

Among the best friends and most fervent admirers of the great Croatian medallist Ivo Kerdić (* Davor, 19. V. 1881 – † Zagreb, 27. X. 1953) was the American William Chauncy Langdon (* 1871 – † 1947). Although they never met, W.C. Langdon was the one who did his best to make the Croatian artist known in the United States. Sixty-odd preserved letters exchanged between both of them bear witness of this friendship. This correspondence is of particular importance for the study of the medallic oeuvre of Ivo Kerdić, as well as the history of the art of the medal in Europe, Croatia, Zagreb and the United States between the two world wars. In the second part of this paper letters written between 1926 and 1947 are quoted and commented.
