My Avatar and me: Impression of Experiences from the Online Environment from the Online Games Player’s Perspective
Tanja Kardum
Abstract
This thesis presents the experience of playing multiplayer online games League of Legends or World of Warcraft from the players’ perspective. The thesis offers the explanation of massive multiplayer online games, and briefly presents their origin and development. After the theoretical part, the empirical part describes the experiences of the players using the method of semistructured interviews. In the first part of the thesis, the players describe the online game which they play. The second part offers the players’ perception of the online and offline environment as well as the description of their self-presentation and their place within the two environments, while the third part focuses on exploration of the ways in which the players establish interaction in the online environment and the way in which they describe and interpret this interaction. The results of the research cannot be generalized due to the small number of the interviewers, but nevertheless, the research has indicated the complexity and multiple layers of the world of multiplayer online games, as well as the inability to separately observe the online and offline environment. This thesis opens numerous issues which need to be explored in order to be able to understand and explain the world of multiplayer online games.
