Abstract

Modern enteral preparations belong to the so-called elementary food, making it difficult to distinguish whether they are medicines or food. When planning parenteral nutrition, it is important to set the aim nutrition itself. To realize that aim, a physician must know the metabolic requirements of the patient. These requirements should encompass the requirements arising from the disease itself, the level of stress etc. For the assessment of the nutritive status there are established and proven formulas to calculate the need for calories. There are sophisticated devices available lately, which - either directly or indirectly - enable the physician an appropriate assessment of both calories and the metabolic status of the patient. Parenteral nutrition of critically ill patients makes up a significant part of the whole therapy and requires constant improvement and adjusment to contemporary attitudes.
