Abstract

The role of glycosaminoglycans in the process of kidney stone formation in calcium urolithiasis was examined. There are contradictory references about their role in this process (promoters or inhibitors). We attempted to define factors of risk for urolithiasis development. The test group consisted of both genders with calcium stones. A concentration of total glycosaminoglycans, expressed according to concentration of creatinine in urine, was determined in the first morning urine. The results showed statistically significantly lower values of total glycosaminoglycans in relation to control group, indicating the possibility of their role as inhibitors. Better discrimination among groups can be achieved, if the results of glycosaminoglycan concentration are shown in the form of (Baggio) index.
