Abstract
Bioactive, polymeric dental composites containing amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) have tremendous appeal due to (1) their potential to arrest demineralization and/or even remineralize detective tooth structures and, (2) their biocompatibility. For the last decade our group has systematically investigated structure/composition/property relationships of ACP-filled polymeric composites in order to develop strategies that better control dispersion of ACP in polymer matrices and increase our understanding of how the structure of the polymer and tiller phases, especially the complex interaction(s) occurring at the AC P/organic matrix interphase, affect such critical properties ot these composites as ion release and mechanical strength. The extensive physicochemical, mechanical and biological studies ot ACP composite materials described in this review illustrate how monomer/polymer molecular structure and filler/matrix interactions affect critical properties and the overall performance of these materials.
