Abstract

Municipal solid waste landfills are unpredictable bioreactors which in cases of mishandling and bad supervision pose a number of risks. The key with municipal waste landfills is to approach them from a standpoint of prevention of the possible consequences, which means using methods of organized waste disposal, and also utilizing landfill gas, an unavoidable consequence with disposal of municipal solid waste with a high share of biodegradable organic matter. The basic precondition for controling the risks posed by landfill gas is to build a landfill gas extraction system, which is based on a system of pipes and wells, which can be built in different ways, based on the needs of a certain landfill.
