Abstract

Data on sixteen Jewish medical doctors who worked in Bjelovar in the 19th and the 20th centuries were revealed within the framework of the study of the history of health care in the city of Bjelovar. Several among them (e.g. Herman Fischer, MD; Dragutin Ländler, MD; and Bela Milhofer, MD) spent their entire active lifetime in Bjelovar, while others operated there (for either a longer or a shorter period of time) as private, hospital, district or military medical doctors – according to the health care organisation of that time, and later continued their careers worldwide. Medical and historical sources witness to their activity and lasting legacy for the Bjelovar health care and culture, which is otherwise rarely mentioned in the existing literature.
