Abstract

This paper analyzes the philosophical work of the nowadays – especially from the standpoint of the research into Croatian philosophical heritage – almost completely forgotten, but in the second half of the nineteenth century greatly influential Croatian politician, publicist and philosopher Lazar Hellenbach. Hellenbach’s philosophy, which received significant attention in European philosophical circles of the time, is presented as a unique synthesis of real-life politics, ethics, social and political philosophy, utopia, ‘metapsychical’ phenomenology and philosophical idealism, and is examined primarily as a critical reflection on the philosophies of Kant and Schopenhauer that took place in the historically specific intellectual context of the intense explorations into the nature of the human soul, unconsciousness and individuality by Hellenbach’s philosophical and scientific contemporaries, like Eduard von Hartmann, Carl du Prel, and Friedrich Zöllner.
