Abstract
During a four-year period (1992 -1995), cytodiagnos is was performed in 19450 VCE smears obtained from fertile women, revealing 1,091 (5.60%) cases of cervical atypia. The incidence of cervical atypia increased in comparision to the previous study (1977-1981) conducted in the same population, when it was 0.9%. The majority of cervical atypias belonged to the grade IIIA, i.e. CIN I (46.50%-60.70%). The incidence of carcinoma in situ (CIS) ranged from 4.86% to 8.68%. The prevention of cervical atypia should focus on health education, especialy in young population, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and regular gynecologic chek-ups with cytodiagnosis of VCE smears.
