Abstract

The author analyzes the reorganization of Karlovac Medical Center from a peacetime to a warfare health institution. Soldiers and inhabitants from our country received adequate medical care in these fatal times despite being only 2 km away from the battlefield and despite new and specific circumstances, such as considerable labour drain, immediate danger of subversive activities and a great inflow of the wounded, whose number sometimes exceeded hospital capacities. This was enabled by a serious, professional and conscientious reorganization of the institution. The remaining personnel treated all the patients from our country correctly and professionally, without any relevant help and support of the experts from other institutions, obtaining excellent results in the field of war surgery. High morale and clear professional ideas were essential for such achievements.
