Abstract
The aim of the paper is to explore the possible consequences and implications of British citizens' decision regarding Brexit on the language policy of the EU, in particular concerning the crucial role of the English language in formal and informal communication within European institutions. The paper analyses European language policy and its fundamental aspects (identity, democracy, clarity, financial consequences) with a particular emphasis on how these aspects could shape the language policy of the EU after the implementation of Brexit. The paper presents an overview of the key development points of language policy since the beginnings of European integration, primarily considering the situation before 1973, i.e. prior to the British accession to the European Economic Community.
