Abstract

In a knowledge-based society, the creation and use of
knowledge and ideas are crucial in the production of wealth.
A key determinant of knowledge-based societies is human
capital, or, in other words, employee expertise and skill.
When speaking of a given economy's competitiveness,
labour force competitiveness is always the focus of particular
attention. One of the most important factors in labour force
competitiveness is the national educational system. This study
provides a theoretical framework for assessing the
educational system as a determinant of employability and
competitiveness of the labour force. Particular attention is
dedicated to the situation in Croatia: the educational structure, the educational system, current knowledge and
expertise, and employer attitudes towards education and
competitiveness of the labour force. These major themes are
brought together in the conclusion which also provides
several proposals for improvement.
