Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to research the movement of employment within the railway system in the Republic of Croatia. The paper examines the inter-dependence of the number of railway transport employees on the one hand, and the total number of employees in the Croatian economy, the number of employees in the transport system, GDP movement, railway line length and dynamic factors of performed transport operations on the other hand. In order to research the laws and regularities that govern the relations between the mentioned stochastic phenomena, methods of descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were used. The obtained insights contribute to scientifically founded scrutiny of the direct contribution of railway transport industry in total employment within the transport sector. Main findings of this paper point to the fact that railway transport will remain a significant source of employment, even though staff retrenchment in this traffic subsystem will also continue as a trend in the near future.
