Abstract
In today’s (post)postmodern, insecure world, there is a continuous increase in the number of prison population, which increases the need for research and development of the penological andragogy. In most modern world countries the inmate population, upon leaving the prison, experiences an exclusion from the wider community, and such a group
of people often ends up on the margins of society or they relapse and turn back to crime. This extremely vulnerable group of people should be approached by carefully implementing the andragogic insights and legitimacy through everyday work. The possibilities for resocialization within a penitentiary institution will primarily depend on the variety of
types of prison treatment, and on the attitudes of a prison service (security service, prison treatment service) towards the prisoners and their sentence. Also, the factors mentioned above are the factors that will directly influence the motivation of prisoners to participate
in the offered resocialization opportunities in the facility. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the contemporary forms of resocialization in penitentiary institutions. There is a relatively small number of recent research on this topic in the world, and this
paper provides an insight into the notions that can contribute to the development of andragogic science in the area of penological andragogy.
