Cyclization of Diethyl(phthalimidoacetyl)malonate into 3-(Phthalimidomethyl)pyrazolin-5-ones

Abstract

The cyclic parent (II) of the title series, and the following
1- or/and 4-substituted derivatives therefrom: 4-ethoxycarbonyl
(III), 1-phenyl-4-ethoxycarbonyl (IV), and 1-phenyl (V), were prepared
by conventional methods. (III) and (IV) gave each a single
product on methylation with ethereal diazomethane. Structures of
these products, and those of (II) - (V), are discussed on the basis
of proton magnetic resonance and infrared spectra.
