Abstract

The aim of our research was to determine the nutritional status of the patients on hemodialysis, regarding the intake of proteins and calories. Beside the available laboratory parametres, the authors also measured the nitrogen balance — a precise indicator of the state of protein synthesis and desintegration. Anthropometric parameteres were also used to evaluate the muscular and adipose mass. Satisfactory results of the calory intake and a positive nitrogen balance were obtained in 30 patients examined in this way. Anthropometric measurements showed a significant deviation, i.e. the whole group had a decrease in body weight, muscular circumference and muscular mass. This was also the case in the subgroup with positive nitrogen balance. The results indicate that despite satisfactory calory (37.65 cal/kg) and protein intake (1.32 g/kg of the body weight), the signs of protein malnutrition still exist, with all the possible consequences. It is, therefore, necessary to consider the possibility of an increased protein intake as well as to correct the biological availability of proteins and influence the factors governing their utilization and tissue distribution.
