Abstract

Prolonged orotracheal intubation, lasting 1—8 days, was observed in 82 patients. The paper discusses the frequency of the symptoms (huskiness, dysphagia, dyspnea) as well as the degree and the localization of laryngeal mucosa lesions. Postmortem examination of 35 larynxes confirmed previous clinical results. Prolonged intubation with glottal lesions causes the expansion of damage to supraglottis and later on to subglottis, as well. Nevertheles, prolonged orotracheal intubation remains one of the methods in the treatment of acute respiratory insufficiency.
