Abstract

The article presents and discusses the epidemiological features of endemic nephropathy (EN), which correspond to the natural focus disease model, and it also offers an original explanation of the 1956 57 outbreak of EN the Brodska Posavina region. In addition, the results of a case-control study of possible exposure on the arable land sites, supporting the natural focus hypothesis of the EN, are presented. The geographic distribution of arable land of healthy and diseased examinees in two endemic villages appears to be quite different. Localities with sparse healthy owners and where a certain clustering of the diseased is observed, appear to gather around the swampy forrest, a potential natural focus. These results, although not proving the nature of EN are the guide lines for further research.
