Abstract

HbA1, HDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol and tri- glyceride concentrations were measured in 18 patients vith non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus previoisly treated with glibenclamide, before and three nonths after the combined treatment with insulin and glibenclamide. HbA, concentration fell significantly after three months (p < 0.01), HDL-cholesterol did not change (1.27 + 0.47 mmol/L to 1.26 + 0.46 mmol/L, p > 0.05), whereas LDL-cholesterol fell slightly but insignificantly (4.32 + 0.87 mmol/L to 4.01 + 0.99 mmol/L, p > 0.05). There was a significant reduction in total cholesterol (p < 0.05) and triglyceride concentrations (p < 0.01), probably reflecting the fall in VLDL-cholesterol concentration. No significant connection has been observed between HbAj and HDL-cholesterol concentrations.
