Abstract

Today, vesicovaginal fistulas are mostly caused by gynecological operations. Due to vaginal scars resulting from previous operations, suprapubical access is suggested in the treatment, because it gives better control of the operative field and better possibility for tissue mobilisation. The basic principle of the operative technique is covering of the vaginal suture with a bladder flap. Thirteen cases are presented, treated in a five-year period. In 10 cases the total success was achieved (76.9 %), i.e. in 7 cases after the first and in 3 cases after the second operation. Three out of four carcinomatous fistulas received a recurrence of the fistula and a definite suprapubic urinary diversion was performed.
