Abstract

A very frequent dilemma, the profilactic application of antibiotics in surgery, has been dealt with from various aspects. Its justification in abdominal, bone and cardiovascular surgery has been analysed. Within the abdominal and bone surgeries the antibiotics are reserved only for more severe and acute cases. A special stress lies on the difference between the preventive (before inoculation) and therapeutic (after inoculation) administration of antibiotics which is in praxis quite difficult to differentiate. The author tries to evaluate critically the available literature by comparing different opinions in order to obtain some relevant facts for general surgeon. The conclusion supports the plea for nonabandonment of basic principles in surgery (precise and preserving surgery) because no antibiotic can compensate bad mistakes in surgeons activities.
