Abstract

Respiratory infections are the most common
childhood diseases. Acute otitis media, streptococcal
angina and pneumonia require the antimicrobial treatment.
Macrolides play an important role in the treatment of
childhood respiratory infections. Azithromycin has been
so far administered for the treatment of more than
80,000,000 children. The methods of its administration
have been changing throughout its use. At the beginning,
the treatment lasted for fi ve days (Day I: 10 mg/kg daily;
Days II – V: 5 mg/kg). A three-day therapy (10 mg/kg once
daily) was introduced afterwards. Despite its long-time use,
new methods of administration improving its effi ciency
and facilitating administration have been continuously
introduced.
