Abstract

Excessive weight and obesity are risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Both are associated with increased cardiovascular as well as total mortality. It is well known that a markedly reduced body weight does not protect the cardiovascular system, so maintaining a “healthy”, stable body weight is a primary goal of reducing cardiovascular risk. The reduction in overall cardiovascular risk is reflected in the reduction of total cardiovascular risk per se as well as in the reduction of other risk factors associated with obesity (arterial hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and glucose intolerance).
