Abstract

This international multicentre, prospective
and randomized clinical study investigated the effi cacy and
tolerability of the sequential treatment of pneumonias with
azithromycin and cefuroxime in 180 hospitalised adult patients.
Azithromycin was used in 89 patients, while cefuroxime was
used in 91 patients. Clinical effi cacy was achieved in 81.7%
of patients treated with azithromycin and 82.0% of patients
treated with cefuroxime. The average total (intravenous and
oral) duration of azithromycin treatment was signifi cantly shorter
than that with cefuroxime: 6.2 and 10.1 days, respectively.
