Abstract

Transcutaneous neurostimulation using acupuncture needles or electrodes of electric stimulators has been more frequently used for relief of persistent pain and alleviation of painful conditions. There are various opinions and recommendations regarding these procedures, and for that reason they are presented and explained in this article on the basis of modern medical knowledge. Firstly, the reader is warned that it is only a supplement to the usual therapeutic procedures, primarily pharmacotherapy. The article explains occurrences in the nervous system during the excitation of the so-called acupuncture points by applying pressure and punctures, by laser beams and during auriculopuncture.
