PRAISE TO THE POPULAR SONG
Pavao Psvličić
Abstract
The discussion analyses the reasons for creation of a popular song, how it is structured, and what is its social status. The author particularly deals with the content of popular songs, as well as their historical context and emphasizes the connection to the melody as an important component. He underlines that a negative stance towards the artistic tradition stems from transience opposing durability, which enables the uneducated to understand it. A popular song starts from the pre¬sumption that the world is fragmentary which makes for the image of the modern world and this is the reason why a popular song has so many fans. The greatest value of a popular song lies in the fact that it has saved lyric poetry from fading and oblivion. The texts set to music in the life of the listeners play the same role that was once played by the lyric poetry, which in the meantime has turned into a reading list for the poets, similar to discussions in science journals. A popular song offers two components the listener looks for: identification and democracy, and the-being-in-the-moment makes some of the popular songs long lasting.
