Abstract

This paper shows the difference between genius and talent in Schopenhauer’s aesthetic considerations. This difference testifies about two paths of aesthetics – the sensory path which is represented by talent and the supersensory path which is represented by genius. This is the basis for the thesis that art transcends the framework of aesthetics since it is possible as the supersensory dimension of human existence. This thesis is expressed in Schopenhauer’s notion of genius which transcends space and time as the basic aesthetic category. This paper starts with the notion of will as a metaphysical category which is manifested in time and space (aesthetics) and its overcoming with art which is the only thing capable of restraining will in its metaphysical determinism. This also manifests the notion that art is opposite aesthetics despite itself being the object of aesthetics.
