Abstract

The article describes the concept of detecting illegal waste landfills in a part of the City of Zagreb by using remote sensing methods on high-resolution satellite images WorldView-2. Pixel base segmentation of the high-resolution satellite images was performed, and then the object-oriented classification (in the Deffiniens Professional 5.0 software) was performed on the selected source and pan-sharpened images of the satellite images according to the parameters: mean and standard deviation. After the classification had been carried out, the results obtained were filtered using indicators of illegal waste disposal landfills in the GIS ArcGIS software package. The final results were interpreted (by matrix confusion parameters) and verified by overlapping with reference data about known illegal laundered waste landfills and by checking them in the field.
