Metabolic Syndrome – Basic Treatment Principles
Manja Prašek
Abstract
Obesity and physical inactivity, which
result in a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases, are
characteristic of civilisation progress and economic prosperity.
Changes in lifestyle both lead to the development
of diseases and affect the physical appearance in a high
number of middle-aged and senior citizens. Consequently,
basic forms of the metabolic syndrome treatment are at
the same time very simple, but most diffi cult to apply. The
patients are motivated to reduce the intake of calories and
increase energy consumption only after vascular incidents,
or after they experience pain or fear. As soon as these
symptoms disappear, most of them get back into their old
habits. Therefore, the motivation for medical self-care, i.e.
increased physical activity, appropriate diet and weight
loss, remains the main problem.
