Abstract

A vertiginous scientific-technological development of modern
society in the recent couple of decades permanently
animates the interest for an increasing number of issues of
bioethical character. The complexity, long-standing and
uncertainty of bioethical dilemmas and decisions have long
since belonged to one of the interest fields of political
decision-making, on the national as well as the international
level. The work displays research results on ethical
committees as special bodies for ethical correction whose
main role consists in supervising scientific research and the
process of making ethical decisions in health institutions.
Particular interest is directed at the legal basis of ethical
committees in the specific context of the European Union,
since the non-obligatory advisory role of the Union’s
responsible structures has created a situation in which actual
decisions concerning bioethics, but also the seriousness of
their responsibility, have been left to institutions of individual
countries.
