Abstract

Antimicrobial stewardship is a strategy, a coherent set of actions which promote using antimicrobials responsibly. They can be applied from individual to global level in human and veterinary medicine and agriculture. Complying to these measures will ensure appropriate and responsible antimicrobial use and thus prolong their activity, decrease antimicrobial resistance, optimize patient outcome, decrease morbidity and mortality caused by multidrug resistant microorganisms and decrease costs.
Antimicrobial resistance has risen up the global agenda, resulting in a series of recommendations on responsible antimicrobial use.
